Kids' Health Insurance Future in Balance
House Considers New Bid on SCHIP Expansion

The U.S. House today is expected to vote on a new proposal to expand health insurance to millions more of American children. A bipartisan drive in Congress has attempted to expand the 10-year-old State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to reach more kids in low- to moderate-income working families who otherwise would not have insurance. SCHIP now reaches 37,000 Iowa children, a figure that would grow significantly under the legislation. Read the backgrounder on SCHIP facts and a guest opinion in the Iowa City Press-Citizen. Our press release sets the record straight on inaccurate claims about access for undocumented immigrants. Also read the one-page backgrounder (Sept. 25) about what's at stake for Iowa, and Sept. 19 press release.

SCHIP catches kids crowded out of insurance. Read the two-page backgrounder.
Shortfalls have become the norm for Iowa in SCHIP funding — Congress and the White House are deciding whether that will continue. Read the two-page backgrounder.
Recent Developments: Sen. Grassley has not been happy with the President's remarks about SCHIP. Read the Des Moines Register story. Neither is Gov. Culver. Read the Governor's press release and letter to President Bush.
